  • Outer Coating: The surface is coated with an artificial pearl essence or layer to mimic the luster and color of natural pearls.
  • Regular Shape: Usually manufactured into perfect spheres or other regular shapes.
  • Uniform Luster/Color: Due to the artificial coating, the luster and color are very consistent with minimal flaws.
  • Relatively Heavy: If the core is shell or glass, it might feel heavier than a natural pearl of the same size.
• Advantages:
  • Low Price: Costs significantly less than natural or cultured pearls.
  • Perfect Appearance: Regular shape (often perfectly round), highly consistent size, color, and luster, nearly flawless surface.

• Material Characteristics:

  • Non-nucleated or Nucleated: Traditionally, most freshwater pearls were non-nucleated (tissue-cultured), meaning they are almost entirely nacre; modern techniques also include bead nucleation.
  • Diverse Shapes: Shapes are highly varied, including round, near-round, oval, rice, button, and irregular (baroque). Perfectly round ones are rarer and more valuable.
  • Variable Luster: Luster ranges from dull to very high (mirror-like). Good freshwater pearls have a soft, warm glow, sometimes with beautiful orient.
  • Surface Features: Being naturally formed, the surface often shows growth textures, pits, blemishes, and other natural markings. Flawless pearls are very rare.
